Position title: Postdoctoral Associate: Population Dynamics

Responsibilities/How to Apply: The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences at Virginia Tech is accepting applications for the position of Postdoctoral Associate. Research topics will focus on population dynamics, modeling, and stock assessment of weakfish - or black seabass-like fisheries of the mid-Atlantic. Comparing models and improving stock assessment will be important for management of such species. Simulation studies will be conducted to identify stock assessment approaches appropriate for black seabass-like fisheries. This position will involve design, implementation, analysis, and presentations. The incumbent will be expected to submit manuscripts based on his/her work to peer-reviewed journals and make presentations at national conferences.

Required Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in fisheries science, ecology, biometrics, natural resource management, or a related field; an exemplary background in quantitative fish population dynamics and theoretical ecology; excellent writing skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a research team; evidence of developing publications based on individual research; ability to work under limited supervision; and a proven publication record.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of C++, Visual Basic, AD Model Builder, MATLAB, WinBugs and/or other computing languages will be an asset. Experience on statistical catch-at-age models and/or MCMC technique is preferred.
Salary: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Position is grant-funded for a period of one year and is renewable for another year based on satisfactory performance.
